Rain, Rain, Rain

Isn’t it supposed to be April showers?

We’ve had plenty of rain and it’s got the grass and weeds going crazy.  I’m glad I have as much mulch down as I do.

When I mulched the strawberries a few weeks ago, the plants were pretty close to the ground.  I went through both patches over the sweekend to weed them and put the mulch in more carefully under the new leaves.  I saw the first little white flower!  With 2 big patches this year, we should have plenty of strawberries. yum!

We’ve been eating chives, and even some of the sprouted spinach.  It was last year’s seed so I planted pretty thickly.  We can eat the thinnings.

We’ve had 2 big scoffs of rhubarb.  Last night Scott made apple rhubarb crisp for Mother’s Day.  Thanks, honey.  There was enough left over for all of us to have it for breakfast, too.  Rhubarb, like many very early plants, is full of goodness and it’s always been considered a spring tonic plant.

I planted a few rows of beets and carrots and I’ve been dropping onion sets in as I go.

I’m looking forward to beet greens.
